Niche compiled its lineup by looking at a bunch of factors that might interest retirees, like how many people of their age live nearby, how many new retirees moved in during the past year, housing costs, property taxes, crime rates, weather and access to things like restaurants, golf courses and doctors.
Overall, Niche analyzed more than 4,200 towns and ranked more than 1,600. And none of the bigger Illinois communities hit the top 10.

The Best Towns to Retire ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of key factors that are important for the recent or soon-to-be retirees at the town level. This grade takes into account key retiree-centered factors, such as weather, crime rates, a similar age population, housing costs, and access to things such as restaurants, golf courses, exercise facilities, and doctors, in an attempt to holistically measure how good an area is for retirement.
Towns Assessed by This Ranking
At the time of analysis, our database contained records for 4,280 towns. Of the towns that met the required qualifications, we were able to grade 4,278 and rank 1,684.
