Unionized faculty members at the University of Illinois at Chicago began their two-day strike on Tuesday. Faculty members hope that the strike will lead to 4.5 percent salary increases (as opposed to the university’s proposed 3.25 percent increase) and a raise in the minimum salary for full-time lecturers without tenure. Additionally, the union is seeking a raise in minimum salaries to $60,000 a year for tenured faculty members, and a raise to $45,000 (from the current $30,000) for nontenured faculty.

For the 2012-2013 school year, the average instructor salary at the University of Illinois at Chicago was $61,400, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Nontenured instructors tend to earn less. Associate, assistant and full professors have higher salaries (assistant professors are nontenured, while associate and full professors are tenured).
